Good to know
Good to Know
- There is no shore diving to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns — every dive site listed here requires a day boat or liveaboard; if you want easy shore-entry diving, Cairns itself isn't it.
- Day-boat 'Outer Barrier Reef' sites (Flynn, Milln, Thetford, Saxon, Norman, Hastings, Moore, Michaelmas, Pellowe) are the realistic option if you only have a day or two — but for the healthiest coral, biggest pelagics and clearest water (Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole, Osprey Reef) you genuinely need a multi-night liveaboard, not a day trip.
- Access to Thetford Reef is notably weather- and tide-dependent, so itineraries there can change at short notice.
- Osprey Reef and Steve's Bommie are in the Coral Sea, technically outside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and are only visited on longer liveaboards aimed at Advanced-certified divers due to depth and current.
- If swimming with dwarf minke whales is your goal, this only happens on specific liveaboard departures in June/July on the Ribbon Reefs — plan around this narrow window.
- You cannot land on Michaelmas Cay itself beyond a roped-off area — it's a protected seabird nesting sanctuary — but the surrounding reef is fully open for diving and snorkeling.
- Cairns' signature course format is the Open Water certification combined with a multi-day outer-reef liveaboard — this tends to cost more than a straightforward pool-and-day-boat course but includes far more open-water dive time on pristine outer reef sites.
- Bring or plan to get a dive medical / fitness-to-dive declaration sorted before booking — operators require a signed medical statement, and some pre-existing conditions or medications can require a doctor's clearance.
- If you're already certified, bring your certification card and logbook — operators will ask to see proof of certification before letting you dive, and it's common to be offered a paid refresher dive if you haven't dived in a while.
- Freediving is not a major or well-established parallel offering in Cairns the way it is in some other dive hubs — if that's your specific interest, don't assume local scuba shops will have it, and confirm directly with any operator before booking.
Day Boat Accessible Sites
Flynn Reef
- Site Type
- Coral garden / bommie complex with wall sections and swim-throughs
- Depth Range
- Shallow coral gardens average around 5m, with wall dives to about 18m
- Distance From Cairns
- About 57 km east of Cairns, roughly 1 hour 18 minutes by boat
- Marine Life Highlights
- Sea turtles, moray eels, cuttlefish, white tip and blacktip reef sharks, giant Maori (humphead) wrasse, giant trevally, anemonefish, and moon wrasse.
- Notes
- One of the most popular and reliable outer reef sites for Cairns day boats; suits novice through experienced divers.
Notable Named Spots Within Reef
- Tracey's Bommie / Little Tracey's
- The Pinnacles (deep bommies with barracuda and resident sharks)
- The Whale / Little Whale (shallow bommie with a 'blowhole' effect at low tide)
Milln Reef
- Site Type
- Shallow coral gardens plus deep bommies with walls, pinnacles and swim-throughs
- Depth Range
- Shallow gardens around 4m; three large bommies dive to about 22m
- Marine Life Highlights
- Large schools of sweetlips, sleeping parrotfish in mucus sacks (visible on night dives), turtles, barracuda, occasional bull rays, reef crabs, painted lobsters, gorgonian fans.
- Notes
- Well regarded for night diving. The 'Wild Side' and 'Round the Bend' sites are less frequently dived due to exposure to south-easterly weather.
Notable Named Spots Within Reef
- Whale Bommie
- Petaj Bommie
- Round the Bend
- Wild Side
Thetford Reef
- Site Type
- Numerous coral bommies with wall dives and swim-throughs; mid-shelf reef
- Distance From Cairns
- Approximately 43 km northeast of Cairns
- Marine Life Highlights
- Giant clams, butterflyfish, damsels, angelfish, staghorn, boulder and plate coral.
- Notes
- Access here is genuinely weather- and tide-dependent — this is a real conditions caveat, not just marketing language, per multiple operator dive-site guides.
Notable Named Spots Within Reef
- Cathedral
- Blue Lagoon
Saxon Reef
- Site Type
- Connected coral gardens and sandy channels with a drop-off at the northern end
- Distance From Cairns
- About 1.5 hours northeast of Cairns
- Marine Life Highlights
- Stingrays buried in sand, turtles, occasional wobbegong sharks in ledges/overhangs, schools of fusiliers and snapper, Maori wrasse, and macro life (nudibranchs, hermit crabs, gobies) in rubble zones.
- Notes
- Often treated as a secondary/backup site by operators, which means comparatively less boat traffic.
Norman Reef
- Site Type
- Shallow coral gardens with deeper, less-touched wall dives on the eastern side
- Marine Life Highlights
- Giant clams, nudibranchs, moon wrasse, giant Maori wrasse, humphead parrotfish, and occasional manta rays.
- Notes
- Also used as an overnight liveaboard mooring location on shorter 3-day/2-night trips, not just a day-boat site.
Hastings Reef
- Site Type
- Coral garden reef
- Marine Life Highlights
- Magnificent soft and hard coral growth, particularly at the 'Coral Gardens' site.
- Notes
- A frequent stop for Cairns day-boat operators.
Notable Named Spots Within Reef
- Coral Gardens
- 1770
- The Twins (bommies from ~20m for guided adventure dives)
- Gold Clubs / Golf Clubs
- Pirates Cove
Moore Reef
- Site Type
- Large horseshoe-shaped reef with deep outer walls
- Marine Life Highlights
- Large schools of jacks/trevally and notably friendly Maori wrasse.
- Notes
- Its size and gentle profile make it popular with pontoon-based operators catering to families, snorkelers, and non-swimmers.
Michaelmas Reef / Michaelmas Cay
- Site Type
- Sand cay with fringing reef and isolated coral bommie cluster
- Distance From Cairns
- About 40–43 km northeast of Cairns, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by boat
- Marine Life Highlights
- Giant clams, humphead Maori wrasse, green sea turtles, and abundant reef fish.
- Notes
- Michaelmas Cay itself is a national park seabird sanctuary — up to 20,000 breeding pairs of seabirds use the island, and access onto the cay is restricted to a roped-off area to protect nesting birds; diving/snorkeling the surrounding reef is unaffected.
Notable Named Spots Within Reef
- The Three Sisters (dramatic coral bommie cluster rising from the seabed)
Pellowe Reef
- Site Type
- Smaller reef closer to the continental shelf edge
- Distance From Cairns
- About 61.5 km east-southeast of Cairns, roughly 1 hour 22 minutes by boat
- Notes
- Smaller than Milln and Flynn Reefs but included in some operators' rotating outer-reef itineraries.
Upolu Reef
- Site Type
- Small reef
- Notes
- Valued mainly for its shorter travel time from Cairns compared to further outer-reef sites, with clear water and soft/hard coral.
Green Island
- Site Type
- Coral cay with inshore patch reef and extensive seagrass beds
- Distance From Cairns
- About 27 km from Cairns
- Marine Life Highlights
- Turtles and dugong feeding in the seagrass beds — one of the few GBR locations with extensive seagrass directly adjacent to coral reef; over 190 hard coral species recorded around the island.
- Notes
- Reached by day boat/ferry, not shore-walkable from Cairns itself; diving here is gentler/shallower and popular for training and easy dives.
Certifying Bodies And Levels
- Dominant Agency
- PADI
- Notes
- PADI is by far the most visible certifying body advertised by Cairns dive operators. Pro Dive Cairns describes itself as running courses from beginner through advanced and professional-development levels, with its flagship 5-day Open Water course run in conjunction with a 3-day/2-night liveaboard trip to the outer Great Barrier Reef.
Levels Commonly Offered
- Discover Scuba Diving (intro, non-certifying)
- PADI Open Water Diver
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
- PADI Rescue Diver
- PADI Divemaster
- Some operators also run PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) / professional-level training
Operator Density
- Summary
- Cairns is the main gateway city for Great Barrier Reef diving and hosts the largest concentration of dive/liveaboard operators of any Australian departure port.
- Estimated Scale
- Beyond the liveaboard operators listed above, Cairns also has numerous separate day-boat dive/snorkel operators and PADI dive centres running courses from the marina and CBD area; the city is widely described as the departure point for most of Australia's diving liveaboards, indicating a genuinely dense, competitive operator market rather than just one or two providers.

Liveaboard Dependent Sites
Cod Hole
- Access
- Liveaboard only — reached on multi-day trips (commonly 3+ nights), sometimes combined with a scenic flight to Lizard Island to begin the itinerary
- Location
- Northern end of the Ribbon Reefs, near Lizard Island
- Site Type
- Bommie/coral garden site famous for a resident fish population
- Best Season
- Diveable year-round on liveaboard schedules; overall Great Barrier Reef visibility and conditions are best June–November.
- Marine Life Highlights
- World-famous for large, tame potato cod that interact closely with divers; also anemones, turtles, olive sea snakes, and dense schools of tropical fish.
Ribbon Reefs (Reef System)
- Access
- Liveaboard only, typically 3–7 night itineraries departing Cairns
- Location
- Far north of the Great Barrier Reef, offshore from Lizard Island
- Site Type
- Series of ribbon-shaped reefs with coral gardens, walls and channels
- Best Season
- Dwarf minke whale season is limited to June–July; general diving best June–November.
- Marine Life Highlights
- High biodiversity reef environments; this is also the main location for the seasonal dwarf minke whale encounters.
Osprey Reef
- Access
- Liveaboard only, on longer (4–7 night) advanced-diver itineraries
- Location
- Coral Sea, roughly 300 km offshore from Cairns, well outside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park boundary
- Site Type
- Isolated seamount/wall with dramatic drop-offs
- Depth Range
- Wall drops of around 1,000m below the surface (recreational dive depth is capped at 40m)
- Marine Life Highlights
- Known as a shark-diving location; operators commonly run a shark feed dive here, weather permitting; strong currents are typical.
- Notes
- Recommended for experienced, Advanced-certified divers due to depth, current and remoteness.
Steve's Bommie
- Access
- Liveaboard only, typically combined with Osprey Reef itineraries
- Location
- Coral Sea pinnacle site
- Site Type
- Isolated pinnacle/bommie dive
- Marine Life Highlights
- Manta rays, sea turtles, and dense coral gardens with sea fans on a compact pinnacle formation.
- Notes
- Named after a dive master, with a commemorative plaque on the site.
Seasonal Notes
- Visibility
- Inner/mid-shelf day-boat reefs typically see visibility around 15m; outer reef and Coral Sea sites regularly exceed 30m and can reach 60m in good conditions.
- Wet Season
- December to May is warmer (water around 29°C in summer) and rainier; diving continues but visibility on some sites can be reduced, and this period overlaps with the North Queensland cyclone season, which can disrupt trips.
- Minke Whales
- Dwarf minke whale encounters are a strictly seasonal, June–July liveaboard-only activity on the Ribbon Reefs.
- Best Diving Season
- June to November is generally considered the best window — cooler water drops below about 25°C (down to roughly 22°C in July–August) but brings better visibility and pelagic species.
Access Overview
Diving in Cairns is entirely boat-dependent — there is no shore diving to the reef itself from mainland Cairns. Two distinct tiers exist: (1) inner/mid-shelf 'Outer Barrier Reef' sites reachable on a single day-boat trip (roughly 1 to 1.5 hours each way from Cairns Marina), and (2) the far-northern Ribbon Reefs/Cod Hole and the Coral Sea (including Osprey Reef and Steve's Bommie), which are genuinely liveaboard-dependent — not doable as a day trip.

- Note On Pricing
- Figures below are typical current market ranges for Cairns-based courses; exact current pricing varies by operator, season, and whether the course is pool/inner-reef based or bundled with an outer-reef liveaboard component (which raises the price but is a distinctive and very common Cairns format).
Freediving Crossover
- Summary
- Research for this call did not turn up evidence of a significant freediving-specific scene or freediving certification courses (e.g. AIDA/SSI Freediving/Molchanovs) being commonly bundled into the mainstream Cairns dive-shop offering. Cairns dive operators and liveaboards are overwhelmingly scuba- and snorkel-focused. Unlike destinations with a well-documented freediving crossover culture, we could not confirm that Cairns dive shops routinely offer freediving courses or that specific sites are marketed as notable for both disciplines, so this should not be assumed.
