Good to know
Good to Know
- Tropical heat in summer (Nov–Apr) makes walking uncomfortable during midday hours (11am–3pm). Plan walks for early morning or evening; bring water bottle and high-SPF sunscreen.
- Bus fares are exceptionally cheap (50 cents flat rate), but services are infrequent outside peak hours. Not ideal for time-sensitive travel.
- Uber availability can be inconsistent during peak demand times. Taxis are often cheaper and more reliably available for airport trips than Uber.
- Car rental is cheapest from city-center depots rather than the airport, which charges surcharges. Off-airport providers often offer free shuttle service.
- Cairns has no toll roads, which helps keep driving costs predictable.
- The CBD is genuinely walkable for tourism and daily activities, but the city is long and thin (hugging the coast), making suburban areas car-dependent.
- Bike rentals are very affordable ($15–$25/day) and the flat terrain is beginner-friendly; routes along the Esplanade and to the Botanical Gardens are popular.

Walkability
- Getting Around Tier
- moderate
- Getting Around Tier Rationale
- CBD walkability is strong for city-center activities, but car-dependent for suburbs; public transit is infrequent outside peak times; Uber availability can be unreliable; distances to nearby attractions and regional destinations (Atherton Tablelands, Daintree) require alternative transport.
- Description
- The Cairns CBD is genuinely walkable with a flat, grid-like layout. The city centre is manageable on foot, with most central attractions (Esplanade Lagoon, Night Markets, Art Gallery, dining and shopping precincts) within 15 minutes' walk of accommodation. However, tropical heat—especially during the wet season (November–April)—makes midday walking (11am–3pm) uncomfortable. Peak walking hours are early morning and evening. Wide footpaths and some pedestrian malls offer good infrastructure, though long traffic light cycles at major intersections deter pedestrian crossing.
