Beaches in Cairns

Cairns city itself has no beach; Northern Beaches are 10–30 minutes away by car. Stinger (jellyfish) season November–May requires protection measures.

Good to Know

  • Cairns city has no beach—use the Esplanade Lagoon or drive 15–30 minutes to Northern Beaches.
  • Safe ocean swimming outside stinger season (June–October) requires no special protection.
  • Best beaches for swimming are Trinity Beach, Palm Cove, Ellis Beach and Holloways Beach, all patrolled year-round and protected by stinger nets in summer.
  • While stinger nets greatly reduce risk, a stinger suit is still recommended when swimming in the ocean.
  • Lifeguard hours at smaller/quieter beaches may be limited; check locally or use patrolled areas between red and yellow flags.
  • Free barbecues are available along most foreshores.
  • Cairns Northern beaches are protected by the Great Barrier Reef structures further offshore, making waters gentle and ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and fishing.

Swimming Safety

Stinger Nets
The stinger resistant swimming enclosures at local beaches give a high degree of protection against Box Jellyfish (but are not 100 percent 'stinger proof').
Stinger Season
Stinger season runs from early November to late May.
Sting First Aid
If stung at a beach without a lifeguard, get out of the water and apply liberal amounts of vinegar; monitor the patient's breathing and send for urgent medical attention.
Stinger Protection
It is safe to swim in Cairns beaches if you wear a stinger suit and swim within the installed stinger nets; it's also safe to swim in Cairns beaches outside stinger season in the months of June, July, August, September, and October.
Crocodile Awareness
Crocodiles typically don't pose a threat on these beaches, however exercise extreme caution; avoid swimming in early mornings and late afternoons; in the event of a croc sighting, the local surf life saving club will erect warning signage for 72 hours.

City Beach Status

Cairns city itself does not feature a beach; locals and visitors cool off in the Esplanade Lagoon, a 4800 sq m saltwater pool lined with parks, shady banyan trees, boardwalks and barbecues.
