Good to Know

  • Cards work well in Kigali's hotels and modern venues, but cash and ATMs remain the backbone of everyday payments in Rwanda, especially outside the capital and tourist hubs.
  • Mobile money (MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money) is deeply embedded in daily transactions — setting up MoMo is highly recommended for local payments.
  • International Visa/Mastercard ATMs are available in Kigali with reasonable fees.
  • Use ATMs located in well-lit, populated areas or within bank premises to minimize potential risks. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid displaying large amounts of cash after withdrawals.
  • Kigali and major towns are increasingly card‑friendly, especially at hotels, malls, and tourist restaurants, yet everyday life is still cash‑first. Plan to use cards for big‑ticket items and keep enough RWF on hand for small shops, markets, moto taxis, and tips.

ATM Access

No Fee ATMs
In Kigali, a few bank ATMs such as GT Bank and Cogebanque (now merging or owned by Equity) are known to not charge withdrawal fees for international cards, making them a good option if your home bank also doesn't charge.
Fee Structure
Other bank ATMs in Rwanda charge anywhere between RWF 3,000 and RWF 9,500 per transaction (Rwandan Franc). These fees are either flat fees or 3% of the transaction amount.
Withdrawal Limits
Typically, ATM withdrawal limits per transaction range between RWF 100,000 and 200,000, with daily caps around RWF 400,000 to 500,000 (approximately US$550).
General Availability
Visitors can use ATMs in Kigali and other major towns without much difficulty. Most ATMs accept international Visa and Mastercard bank cards.
Dynamic Currency Avoidance
In Rwanda, some ATMs may ask Accept OR Decline Conversion (also known as With or Without Conversion, or, Charge in RWF). To avoid extra fees, select 'Decline/Without' Conversion or 'Charge in RWF'.

Tipping Norms

Porters
It costs approximately $10 to hire a porter for your trek. If you wished to tip them, $2-$5 would suffice.
Hotel Staff
If someone handles heavy luggage, 500–1,000 RWF is a thoughtful gesture. At upscale lodges in Musanze or Akagera, a small tip for the room attendant at the end of your stay is customary — 2,000–5,000 RWF ($2–$5) per night of your stay.
Restaurants
Independent restaurant tipping in Kigali and Musanze follows a simple rule — leave 10 percent of the bill for service that met or exceeded expectations, nothing is obligatory and leaving nothing does not cause offence in casual local restaurants.
Guides Drivers
Tip your driver-guide $15 to $20 per person per day for a private safari vehicle. On a 7-day Rwanda trip with two passengers, that means roughly $200 to $280 total for the driver-guide across the trip — paid at the end of the safari as a lump sum rather than daily installments.
General Culture
Rwanda does not have a strong tipping culture by American or European standards.
Currency Preference
For local service staff (waiters, housekeeping, drivers), RWF is preferred and more practical. For high-value tips like gorilla trekking porters (USD 20) or safari guides, crisp USD notes are perfectly acceptable and often preferred.
Restaurants Upscale
Tipping is not customary in most places in Rwanda, with the exception of some higher-end restaurants in town where 10% of the final bill is standard.
Gorilla Trekking Guides
Gorilla Trekking Porters: USD 20 is the standard and highly expected fee.

Card Acceptance

Amex
American Express is rarely accepted, and when it is, additional fees often apply.
Surcharges
Luxury lodges and safari camps typically accept credit cards, though some may add a surcharge of 3-5% for card payments.
Visa Mastercard
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at upmarket hotels, lodges, and some restaurants in Kigali, but Rwanda remains primarily a cash-based economy, and card acceptance is limited outside major establishments.
Where Cards Work
Large hotels, supermarkets, cafes, and shopping malls usually accept card payments.

Currency Exchange

Avoid
Avoid exchanging currency at the airport. A captive market means that USD/RWF rates are often worse in the airport than in city centers.
Best Locations
Bureaux de change (FOREX Bureaus) are mostly located in Kigali and can offer a slightly better exchange rates than most banks.
Banks Also Available
Banks in Kigali, like Bank of Kigali and Cogebanque, offer reliable exchange services.

Kigali has a modern, well-organized banking system regulated by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR), with 16 licensed commercial banks as of 2025. The sector has grown significantly and operates to professional standards. Most banks offer current accounts, savings accounts, credit cards, loans, and international transfers, with many providing specialized expat and business services.

Digital Banking Note

Neobanks and international banking services (e.g., HSBC Expat) are available for minimal maintenance fees and reduced international transfer costs, suitable for those who travel frequently
