Beaches in Venice

Good to Know

  • Lido is the main tourist beach destination with both free and paid facilities; quieter areas exist at San Nicolò and Alberoni if you prefer fewer crowds.
  • Pellestrina is genuinely less touristy than Lido and preferred by locals seeking solitude; no resorts or facilities exist there, making it ideal for a slow, authentic beach day.
  • All Lido beaches have sandy, shallow entry ideal for families with children.
  • If you're a diver or snorkeler, Ca' Roman's submerged rock formations (tegnùe) at ~20m depth offer rich marine life.
  • Vaporetto or bus access is frequent and affordable; journey times from central Venice are 15–60 minutes depending on destination.
  • Bike rental is available on Lido; cycling between Lido and Pellestrina via the dike path is a scenic, car-free experience.

    Character Notes
You will see ramshackle capannas made from driftwood on the rocks. These belong to the people that constructed them. The further down you go the quieter it gets.

    Description
A long and narrow island suspended between the sky and the water, it is home to fisherman and lacemakers… and to the longest beach in the Municipality of Venice: 8,5 KM of sand beaches in front of pristine waters. Unlike the Lido, the beaches of Pellestrina are not the destination of Venetians and tourists. Instead, they are enjoyed mostly by locals and a few of those who cycle on the stunning Lido to Chioggia bicycle lane.
    Character Notes
Since Pellestrina is so narrow (from 23 meters to 1,2 km at most in its widest part), you won't find resorts on Pellestrina. And that is for two very simple reasons: firstly, space would be very limited; secondly, beaches are literally in people's backyard and locals can go back and forth as much as they please to fetch everything they need! Pellestrina is not very touristy, so you will find yourself dining with the locals.

    Description
Ca' Roman, a green oasis with a large free dune beach, which is also part of a Lipu protection zone. This area is also suitable for snorkellers and divers, because of the presence of rock formations rich in biodiversity, the so-called tegnùe, which break up the monotony of the sandy seabed.
    Character Notes
If you are an expert snorkeller and diver, then the sea off Pellestrina will reveal a submerged treasure of rocks to be discovered with mask and scuba tank: the 'tegnùe', or 'retained' in Venetian, so called because these seabeds used to hold fishing nets. These are rock formations at a depth of 20 metres, a true ecological niche rich in fish, crustaceans, actinias and corals!

    Onsite Amenities

    • Protected nature reserve (40 hectares)
    • Dunes and pine woodland
    • Snorkeling and diving sites
    • Walking paths
