Good to know
Good to Know
- Save 112 as your default emergency contact in Italy — it works free on any phone, even with no SIM card or credit, and operators can route you to police, fire, or medical help and often speak English.
- Because Venice's historic center is crossed by canals, the Coast Guard/maritime line (1530) is worth knowing in addition to 112 — for anything involving the water (falls into canals, boat incidents), either number will get you help.
- Downloading the 'Where ARE U' app before you need it is useful for solo nomads: it can silently alert 112 and send your GPS location even if you can't speak during the call.
- Venice's historic center has only one full hospital — Ospedale SS. Giovanni e Paolo — so in a genuine emergency you may be moved by water ambulance rather than road ambulance; expect this to take longer than a mainland emergency response.
- For serious trauma (major accidents, etc.), patients are often stabilized at SS. Giovanni e Paolo and then transferred to Ospedale dell'Angelo in Mestre, which is the region's dedicated trauma center — so 'nearest hospital' and 'best hospital for major trauma' are not always the same building here.
- Dial 112 (EU-wide emergency number) or 118 (Italian medical emergency/SUEM) for ambulance dispatch.
- EU/EEA visitors with a valid EHIC or UK GHIC can access public ER care under reciprocal arrangements; non-EU visitors without Italian coverage should expect to be billed directly for ER treatment, so travel insurance is strongly advised.
- Two small walk-in first-aid points (not full ERs) operate in Piazza San Marco and Piazzale Roma for minor issues; these are useful for simple triage but will refer anything serious to SS. Giovanni e Paolo.

Recommended Official Safety Apps
Where ARE U (112 Where ARE U)
- Function
- Connects directly to the 112 system, automatically transmits GPS location to operators, supports silent/text-based emergency chat for situations where speaking isn't possible, and can store personal/ICE emergency data.
- Developer
- Developed by Lombardy Region, supported by all Italian PSAPs (Ministry of Interior)
- Platforms
- iOS and Android, free
- Note On Coverage
- Originally rolled out region by region in Italy; by 2025 the underlying 112 PSAP system (and app support) has been extended nationally, but confirm current functionality in the Veneto region before relying on it exclusively.
Hospitals
Ospedale SS. Giovanni E Paolo (Ospedale Civile Di Venezia)
- Hours
- Pronto Soccorso (ER) open 24 hours a day, every day
- Address
- Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, 6777, 30122 Venezia (Castello sestiere), historic center
- Trauma Level
- General/central hospital ER with an orthopedic trauma unit on-site — but it is NOT the region's designated major trauma hub. It functions as a 'spoke' facility within the ULSS 3 Serenissima network; serious multi-trauma cases are typically stabilized here and then transferred to the mainland trauma hub if needed.
- Notes
- This is the only full hospital located inside the historic (canal) city itself, reachable by vaporetto (Ospedale stop, line 5.2) or on foot; it houses general surgery, cardiology, ICU, orthopedics, obstetrics, pediatrics and other specialties alongside the ER.
Ospedale dell'Angelo (Mestre)
- Hours
- Pronto Soccorso (ER) open 24 hours a day, every day
- Address
- Via Paccagnella 11, 30174 Mestre (Venice mainland), roughly 15–25 minutes by train/car/bus from central Venice — not within the historic center
- Trauma Level
- Designated regional 'Ospedale HUB' for the Venice metropolitan area and ULSS 3 Serenissima, containing a dedicated Trauma Center (Centro del Trauma) plus intensive care and the provincial SUEM 118 ambulance operations center. It is described as the reference point for major road and workplace trauma in the province.
- Notes
- Listed here despite being outside the historic center because it is the actual major-trauma destination serving Venice; patients with serious trauma from the historic city are often transferred here by ambulance boat/road ambulance. Has a helipad for emergency transfers.
Ospedale Al Mare (Lido Di Venezia) — Small ER
- Hours
- Emergency department hours vary; smaller-scale service than the main city hospital
- Address
- Lido di Venezia (reachable by vaporetto from central Venice)
- Trauma Level
- Small, limited-capacity emergency department; no pediatric department on-site.
- Notes
- Locals note this ER is extremely limited in scope and that children in particular are often sent on to the hospital in central Venice instead.
