Good to Know

  • Stay near Batu Bolong or Berawa if you want the most walkable experience; these neighborhoods are especially great for digital nomads with plenty of laptop-friendly spots and scooter access.
  • Rent a scooter (if you're confident) or book a private driver for comfort and convenience.
  • Ride hailing in Canggu operates under informal local agreements rather than formal bans, and some streets, beach entrances, and resort-adjacent areas discourage app-based pickups.
  • Canggu is a relatively safe area to walk around at night, just ensure you don't invite additional attention to yourself with expensive jewelry; ordering a Grab or Gojek at night is a safe alternative.
  • For most things beyond a sunset beach walk, using a scooter or taking Gojek/Grab is recommended.
  • FINNS Beach Club and Grab offer a free shuttle service in the Berawa area that stops at a dozen destinations.

Walkability

Challenges
In peak hours the roads are crammed with traffic and many scooter drivers use the pavements and sidewalks as extensions of the road, and sidewalks are regularly blocked by obstacles like trees, broken slabs, raised drains, and Bali street dogs. During peak hours (morning and late afternoon), sidewalks are blocked by obstacles and roads are in similar states of disrepair.
General Assessment
Canggu is spread out and not pedestrian-friendly, though this varies significantly by neighborhood.
Getting Around Tier
moderate
Getting Around Tier Rationale
Canggu is spread out with poor sidewalks and heavy traffic, but scooter rentals and ride-hailing (Gojek/Grab, despite some no-gojek zones) make getting around manageable, especially within walkable pockets like Batu Bolong and Berawa.

Most Walkable Areas

  • Batu Bolong
    Description
Near Batu Bolong you can access a lot on foot or scooter. Batu Bolong Street in Canggu has continuous sidewalks, though watch out for no-gojek zones.
  • Berawa
    Description
Berawa has become one of Bali's most desirable neighborhoods because you can actually walk to cafés, restaurants, and beach clubs, offering a refreshing alternative where coffee shops, brunch spots, grocery stores, sunset venues, and Berawa Beach are all within easy reach.
  • Beach Front
    Description
The beachfront is super easy to walk along—you can walk almost the entire length of the coast along the beaches in Bali.

Rideshare Apps

Shared Issues
The locked-in fare is only locked in if a driver actually accepts and shows up; in practice, on a rainy evening in Canggu, you can sit on the kerb watching drivers accept, drive towards you, then cancel. For short motorbike trips expect fares around IDR 10,000 to IDR 30,000 depending on distance and traffic; car rides for intra-town transfers commonly fall between IDR 40,000 and IDR 120,000.

Apps Available

  • Grab
    Reliability
In Canggu you should have no problem using Grab Ride services. Grab is the most reliable rideshare option in Bali—price shown upfront before confirming, driver tracked on the map, payment by card or cash. It's safe, affordable, and removes all guesswork.
    Notes
Grab availability fluctuates depending on location and time, and in some areas Grab drivers may be less willing to enter narrow streets. Gojek and Grab don't always work due to regulations put in place by the Canggu taxi mafia, which prevent pickups and dropoffs in certain areas via local taxi alliances.
  • Gojek
    Reliability
Gojek typically has stronger motorbike availability in Canggu, especially during daytime hours, as it is more commonly used as a local app in Indonesia, often resulting in wider driver availability for short trips.
    Notes
Gojek frequently rejects foreign credit cards due to 3D Secure authentication issues; the most reliable solution is to top up Gojek's digital wallet GoPay by transferring money using a service like Wise or paying cash at a local Indomaret or Alfamart.

Scooter Rental

Fuel Cost
Fuel costs approximately IDR 10,000 per litre at Pertamina stations, and a full tank on a Honda Scoopy lasts two full days of moderate riding.
Availability
Scooter rental agencies have popped up all over Canggu as almost every traveler wants to rent a scooter.
Popular Models
The Bali fleet includes the Honda Vario 160 (strong engine, compact), Honda ADV 160 (built for longer distances and varied terrain), Yamaha NMAX 155 (touring comfort) and the Yamaha XMAX.
Legal Requirements
Indonesian law requires an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement, or a local Indonesian licence (SIM C); a standard car licence does not qualify, even with an IDP—the motorcycle category must be present. Police checkpoints operate regularly around Canggu, and fines are typically IDR 500,000.

Public Transit

Status
There are some public bus services on the island and some of them pass through Canggu, but they seem to have been designed to ensure that no bus comes near anywhere that a tourist is likely to stay at, visit or want to go to, so the public buses are essentially invisible.
Kura Kura Bus Flat Fare
IDR 100,000

Each KURA-KURA line has a flat-fare for a single journey; it's 100,000 IDR per person from Kuta to Ubud (and vice versa) or 160,000 IDR for a round-trip ticket, with a charge of 20,000 IDR for luggage.

Peak Traffic Times

Expect congestion especially during peak hours (4–7 PM) and near shortcut roads. Seminyak–Canggu at 5–7pm can add 30–40 minutes to a trip.
