Food & Dining in Cairo

Good to Know

  • Most nomad/expat dining concentrates in Zamalek, Downtown Cairo, Garden City, Heliopolis, and Maadi. Budget to mid-range dining delivers the best quality and value; Cairo's food quality peaks at mid-range level, not the upscale end.
  • Street food from busy stalls with high turnover is generally safe—koshary shops, ful carts, and hawawshi vendors that are visibly busy are reliable choices. Avoid food sitting out at low-traffic stalls.
  • Bottled water is standard practice; tap water is officially treated but most residents drink bottled.
  • Service charge and VAT combined amount to roughly 26% extra at sit-down restaurants. Tipping 10-15% is common even when service is included.
  • Cash is mandatory for markets, local restaurants, and street food; cards are standard at hotels and upscale venues.
  • For authentic experience, Downtown has concentrated cluster of local restaurants and juice bars at budget prices near Talaat Harb Square. Islamic Cairo (Khan el-Khalili area) offers traditional Egyptian food to local crowds.
  • Egyptian cuisine is naturally rich in vegetarian options relying on beans, grains, vegetables, and olive oil—meat is often optional rather than essential.
  • Cairo's food scene is characterful but variable—same dish from different vendors shows quality range. Consistency is higher at established restaurant chains than single eateries.
