Good to know
Good to Know
- For any emergency in Zakopane or the surrounding Tatras, 112 is the simplest number to remember and works on any phone, but locals and rescue services still commonly use the direct numbers 997 (police), 998 (fire), and 999 (ambulance).
- Because Zakopane sits at the edge of the Tatra Mountains, save the TOPR/GOPR mountain rescue number 601 100 300 (or short code 985) before any hike — this is a separate service from standard police/fire/ambulance and is the correct first call for a mountain accident, avalanche, or someone lost or injured on a trail.
- As of recent government audit findings, calls to the ambulance number 999 are not currently forwarded through the 112 system the way police (997) and fire (998) calls are, so if in doubt for a medical emergency, dialing 999 directly can be just as reliable as 112.
- Poland has not yet implemented Advanced Mobile Location (AML) technology, so if you can't clearly state your location (especially on a mountain trail), try to give landmarks, trail markers, or GPS coordinates to the operator.
- Zakopane has only one hospital with an Emergency Department (SOR), so it also handles the huge seasonal influx of skiers and hikers from the whole Tatra region — expect longer waits during peak ski season and summer holidays for non-critical injuries.
- Emergency Department visits are covered by Poland's national health fund (NFZ) for patients with valid health insurance; travelers without EU health coverage or private insurance may be charged directly, so travel/ski insurance is strongly recommended.
- For non-life-threatening issues after your regular clinic is closed (colds, minor injuries, etc.), the hospital also runs a night and holiday primary-care service at the same building, which is meant to take pressure off the Emergency Department — use 112/999 and the ED itself only for genuine emergencies.
