Good to Know

• Skopje Airport is small and manageable; official airport taxis are the most straightforward option if not taking the shuttle bus.
• Bus payment: always purchase tickets in advance—cash payment is not accepted on city buses or intercity coaches. Use the Skopska Kartica or buy from authorized sellers.
• For intercity travel, buses are generally faster and more frequent than trains. International train services to Serbia, Greece, and Kosovo have been suspended since 2020.
• Avoid unofficial taxis, especially near the airport or tourist areas. Always use official airport taxis or call a registered company; confirm meter is running or agree on fare before departing.
• Matka Canyon (17 km, ~30 min by bus or car) and Mount Vodno are excellent nearby escapes accessible without a private car.
• Lake Ohrid (202 km, ~3 hours by bus) is a major destination; while possible as a long day trip, an overnight stay is often more rewarding.
• Transportation tickets are very inexpensive by European standards; expect short domestic bus routes under 200 MKD and longer journeys well under 500 MKD.
• Station staff are more reliable than online schedules; confirm bus/train times in person before departure, as timetables can shift without warning.
