Scuba Diving in Roseau

Open Water course
EC$1,350

Updated July 2026

Good to Know

  • Champagne Reef is the only genuine shore dive/snorkel in the Roseau area — almost every other named site requires a short boat ride into the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve.
  • There are no liveaboard dive boats operating out of Dominica — all diving here is day-boat or shore-based through local dive shops.
  • December to April is generally considered the calmest, most reliable diving window in the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve.
  • A marine reserve user fee applies to enter the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve; most dive operators bundle this into their trip price.
  • Sites like Crater's Edge and The Village can have noticeable current, so they're better suited to more experienced divers, while sites like L'Abym and Champagne Reef are considered suitable for all levels.
  • The Open Water 'Referral' route — doing academics and pool/confined-water training with a shop back home, then flying to Dominica only for the 4 open-water dives — is heavily promoted here and is usually cheaper and faster (about 2 days) than doing the full course on-island (about 3–5 days).
  • Most shops add a Soufrière-Scott's Head Marine Reserve user fee (around USD $2 per dive or per trip) on top of the quoted course price — factor this in when comparing quotes.
  • Some shops price small/private courses per person with a minimum of two students; solo travelers may be charged a single-diver surcharge if they can't be paired with another student.
  • Dive Dominica and Fort Young Dive are effectively in-town/adjacent to Roseau, while Nature Island Dive (Soufrière) and the northern operators (Cabrits Dive, SALT Dominica) require a drive of 20 minutes to over an hour, so factor that into which base makes sense for your stay.
  • Diving is possible year-round, but visibility and conditions are generally best from February to May; June through October is hurricane season.

Dive Sites And Conditions

Access Summary
Diving from Roseau is genuinely day-boat based, not liveaboard-dependent — there are no liveaboards operating out of Dominica at all. The Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve is reached by a short boat ride (a few miles / roughly 20-30 minutes) from Roseau-based or Soufriere-based dive shops. The one major exception is Champagne Reef, which is a genuine shore dive/snorkel entry directly off the beach near Pointe Michel.
Best Season General
The reserve is generally best dived between December and April, when seas are calmest.
Region Context
Dive Dominica and other Roseau-area operators run diving almost entirely into the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve (SSMR), a protected volcanic-crater bay a few miles south of Roseau. Two other marine reserves exist on the island (Cabrits National Park Marine Section in the far north near Portsmouth, and the Salisbury Marine Reserve in the central west), but those require a much longer drive/boat transfer from Roseau and are not covered here.

Sites

  • Champagne Reef
    Type
shore-accessible reef with volcanic (geothermal) vent feature
    Access
Shore dive/snorkel — one of the few true shore-entry dives on the island, near Pointe Michel about 20 minutes south of Roseau by road
    Depth Range
    Shallow, roughly 15-25 feet
    Marine Life Highlights
Puffer fish, trumpet fish, lion fish, parrot fish, batfish, eels, and streams of warm volcanic gas bubbles rising from the seafloor; visitors have also reported seeing seahorses and squid, and remnants of an old shipwreck are visible at around 25 feet.
    Notes
The 'champagne' bubble effect is only part of the dive — adjacent sand/seagrass and reef areas make up the rest.
  • Scott's Head Pinnacle
    Type
    pinnacle / swim-through / wall
    Access
Short boat trip within the SSMR, off Scott's Head village
    Depth Range
Begins around 35 feet at the pinnacle, with the wall on the far side dropping to more than 120 feet
    Marine Life Highlights
The dive starts on a rock formation called 'Swiss Cheese' at the Soldierfish Cave, a swim-through usually packed with soldierfish and grunts; the pinnacle swim-through is also full of blackbar soldierfish, grunts, and lobster.
    Notes
Considered a moderately difficult dive suited to certified divers; known for excellent visibility.
  • Scott's Head Drop Off (Scott's Head Point)
    Type
    wall
    Access
Short boat trip within the SSMR
    Depth Range
    40 to 100 feet
    Marine Life Highlights
Pink and azure vase sponges, orange icing sponges, yellow tube sponges, and green rope sponges, with nooks hiding lobster, crabs, and several kinds of cleaner shrimp.
    Notes
The dive ends with a shallow, sponge-rich safety stop considered a highlight in itself.
  • Crater's Edge
    Type
    pinnacle / wall, pelagic-focused
    Access
Short boat trip, northwest of Scott's Head Pinnacle along a volcanic ridge
    Depth Range
Varies along the ridge and wall
    Marine Life Highlights
Masses of black jack, bar jacks, rainbow runners, tuna, yellowtail snapper, and cero hunting baitfish, backed by a wall of colorful sponges and giant barrel sponges, sometimes escorted by large barracuda.
    Notes
Can be combined with Scott's Head Pinnacle by following the ridge between them.
  • Soufriere Pinnacles
    Type
    pinnacles
    Access
Short boat trip, north of Soufriere village within the SSMR
    Depth Range
Shallow to moderate, often used as a second dive of the day
    Marine Life Highlights
Frogfish and seahorses are regularly reported here.
    Notes
Popular as a relaxed second dive after a deeper morning dive.
  • L'Abym (La Sourcier)
    Type
    wall
    Access
Short boat trip, southern corner of the SSMR
    Depth Range
Start on a sandy/rock shelf at about 25 feet, wall itself is roughly 1,500 feet, viewable from around 30 feet off it
    Marine Life Highlights
Seahorses, scorpionfish, turtles, and solitary barracuda.
    Notes
Despite the massive wall, this site is considered suitable for all diver levels, with rarely any current.
  • Dangleben's Pinnacles
    Type
    pinnacles
    Access
Short boat trip, on the northern edge of the Soufriere crater, more exposed to the open channel
    Depth Range
A series of five pinnacles ranging from about 40 to 80 feet (roughly 18-30 meters at the deepest point)
    Marine Life Highlights
Sponge- and coral-covered pinnacles; in winter months the southernmost pinnacle sees feeding frenzies of bar jacks, horse-eye jacks, crevalle jacks, cero, and occasional barracuda, plus giant barrel sponges and mating blue creole wrasse.
    Notes
Regarded by local dive guides as one of the standout sites north of Soufriere; one of the deeper sites in the reserve.
  • Coral Gardens
    Type
    shallow reef
    Access
Short boat trip, inshore from Dangleben's Pinnacles
    Depth Range
    Shallow
    Marine Life Highlights
Large areas of finger and pencil coral.
    Notes
A relaxed, colorful shallow dive, often paired with deeper sites nearby.
  • Point Guignard
    Type
    sloping reef
    Access
Short boat trip, just north of Coral Gardens
    Depth Range
    Gradually sloping
    Marine Life Highlights
Seahorses, nudibranchs, and sea slugs — a favored macro-life site.
    Notes
Best for divers interested in small critters rather than big pelagic action.
  • The Village
    Type
pinnacles at the confluence of Atlantic and Caribbean currents
    Access
Short boat trip, northwest area where the two seas meet
    Depth Range
    Variable
    Marine Life Highlights
Three pinnacles where mixed Caribbean/Atlantic currents bring in pelagics such as barracuda and jacks.
    Notes
Site conditions and sightings vary considerably by day due to the current mix.

Certifying Bodies And Levels

Primary Agency
PADI is the dominant agency among Roseau-area operators
Secondary Agency
SSI is also offered, notably by Nature Island Dive in nearby Soufrière, which trains under either SSI or PADI
Notes
Nature Island Dive in Soufrière (about a 20-minute drive south of Roseau, so a day-trip rather than in-town option) runs cross-agency Divemaster training and Instructor Evaluations. Their site states they are: "Open to ALL Divemasters, from any diving Agency (SSI, PADI, CMAS, NAUI, etc)" for a June intensive with an instructor evaluation. Fort Young Dive, based right in Roseau at the Fort Young Hotel, is a PADI dive center offering the standard PADI course ladder from Discover Scuba through Advanced Open Water on-site.

Levels Commonly Available

  • Discover Scuba Diving (non-certification intro dive)
  • Open Water Diver (including Junior Open Water for ages 10+)
  • Open Water Referral completion (finish academics/pool at home, complete only the 4 open-water dives in Dominica)
  • Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Specialty courses (deep, night, naturalist, fish ID, and others)
  • Divemaster / professional-level training

Operator Density

Summary
Several named operators cluster in and immediately south of Roseau along the Castle Comfort strip, generally a 5–10 minute drive from the city center, with a few more further afield on the island.

Further Afield For Context

  • Nature Island Dive — based in Soufrière, roughly a 20-minute drive south, right on the Soufrière-Scott's Head Marine Reserve
  • Cabrits Dive and SALT Dominica — based near Portsmouth/Toucari in the north of the island, roughly 45–60 minutes from Roseau, for divers wanting the north-coast sites

Roseau And Castle Comfort Area Operators

  • Fort Young Dive (Victoria Street, Roseau — on the waterfront in the city itself)
  • Dive Dominica (Victoria Street, Castle Comfort, about 6 minutes' drive south of downtown Roseau)
  • Anchorage Dive Centre (Castle Comfort)
  • East Carib Dive
  • AL Dive (small, family-owned operator)

Freediving Crossover

Detail
No Roseau-area dive shop was found to commonly advertise dedicated freediving certification courses (e.g. AIDA/SSI Freediving/Molchanovs) alongside scuba. The operators researched (Fort Young Dive, Dive Dominica, Nature Island Dive, Anchorage Dive Centre) market themselves specifically around PADI/SSI scuba training and boat/shore scuba trips, not freediving instruction.
