Pets in Queenstown

Pet-friendly

Good to Know

  • Queenstown is one of the more dog-welcoming towns in New Zealand — expect outdoor patio seating to be the norm at pet-friendly cafés and bars rather than indoor access.
  • The Queenstown Bay–Frankton passenger ferry is a great free option for traveling with a leashed dog, but local buses are much stricter about pets, so budget for taxis/rideshare or walking if you don't have a car.
  • If relocating with a pet from most Western countries (Category 3), plan for a 6+ month prep timeline and a mandatory minimum 10-day quarantine stay in Auckland or Christchurch before your pet can join you in Queenstown — it's not a quick or cheap process.
  • Once your pet is settled in Queenstown, you must register it with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and get it microchipped locally (if not already) within 2 months of registration, or risk a $300 infringement.
  • Wineries and some accommodation allow dogs but policies vary property-by-property (especially indoor access) — it's worth calling ahead rather than assuming.
  • Queenstown's dog-friendly cafe and bar scene is concentrated in the central town area and in Frankton (a short drive or ferry ride away) — the free dog-friendly ferry between Queenstown Bay and Frankton is a handy way to avoid the town centre's limited parking.
  • Most core vet clinics (Remarkable Vets, Petfirst) are based in Frankton rather than the very centre of Queenstown town, so budget a short drive or taxi if you're staying centrally.
  • Published Queenstown-specific vet price lists are scarce online — expect to confirm exact consultation and procedure fees directly with the clinic, as national NZ averages are the best available benchmark.
  • If you have a cat and prefer to avoid clinic visits, a mobile cat vet service (Lakes Vets) operates in the area.

Social Acceptance

Limits
Adventure activities like bungy jumping and jet boating are off-limits for dogs, though some tour operators (e.g. the Kawarau Bungy Center) will mind a dog or provide water while an owner does the activity.
Summary
Queenstown is genuinely dog-friendly by New Zealand standards. Many cafés, bars, and even wineries welcome dogs, though almost always in outdoor seating areas rather than indoors.
Transport
The town's passenger ferries are notably pet-friendly: dogs are welcome to join for free on the Queenstown Ferries route between Queenstown Bay and Frankton, needing only to be leashed rather than carried, while rules for pets on the local buses are much more restrictive.
Public Spaces
Dogs are welcome in Queenstown Gardens as long as they stay on a leash, and the council maintains an interactive map showing where dogs can be walked and when they must be on a lead.

Examples

  • Kinross Winery loves guests to bring their dogs for a wine tasting, a meal at the bistro, and a stroll around the property among the vines, and dogs (or cats) can even stay overnight in on-site vineyard cottages for a small extra cleaning fee.
  • Dogs can hang out inside and out at Canyon Brewing in Arthur's Point, and Altitude Brewing in Frankton welcomes well-behaved dogs kept on a lead.
  • Some hotel groups take it further — QT Queenstown offers pet-friendly rooms with a dog bed, a mini bar of dog treats and an in-room dog dinner menu, for dogs under 20kg.

Local Registration After Arrival

Penalty
If registration fees are not paid on time, owners can be charged a penalty.
Requirement
Once in Queenstown, dogs must be registered with the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC); all dogs over the age of three months must be registered, and if you've recently arrived with a dog you need to register it with your local council.
Microchipping Locally
QLDC requires all pet dogs to be microchipped within 2 months of registration under the Dog Control Act, and failure to microchip can result in a $300 infringement fee.

Import Requirements

Permit
An import permit is required for pets other than cats and dogs from Australia, and applications should be submitted at least 20 working days before travel.
Microchip
Pets must be identified with an ISO 11784/11785-compliant, 15-digit microchip, and this must be implanted BEFORE any rabies vaccination is given — if the vaccination happens first, it is considered invalid and must be repeated.
Quarantine
All pets from Category 2 or 3 countries must undergo a minimum 10-day quarantine at an MPI-approved facility, and pets from Australia usually do not need to quarantine (though some may if unwell). Approved quarantine facilities are in Auckland and Christchurch, not Queenstown itself, so plan for travel onward after release.
Regulatory Body
New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) / Biosecurity New Zealand oversees all pet imports under strict Import Health Standards, since the country is rabies-free and protective of its ecosystem.
Upcoming Change
A new Import Health Standard (IHS) and related model certificates take effect on 1 July 2026, with a 9-month transition period during which either the 2021 or 2026 IHS requirements will be accepted.
Other Tests Dogs
Additional requirements for dogs from higher-risk countries commonly include heartworm, Brucella canis, Babesia gibsoni, and leptospirosis testing/treatment, plus internal and external parasite treatments shortly before travel.
Pregnancy And Age
Cats and dogs must meet minimum age requirements on the relevant veterinary certificate and cannot be more than 42 days pregnant on the date of shipment.
Country Categories
New Zealand places exporting countries into 3 categories: Category 1 is Australia (including Norfolk Island), with Category 2 and 3 covering other rabies-free or rabies-controlled countries; if a pet's country of origin is not listed in any category, it cannot be directly imported.
Residency Requirement
Except for pets from Australia, cats and dogs must have resided in the country of export for at least 6 months (or since birth) immediately before shipment.
Rabies Vaccination And Titre
For pets from Category 2 or 3 countries, a rabies vaccination is required at least 1 month and not more than 6 months before leaving (when the pet is at least 3 months old), along with a rabies titre test no more than 18 months before leaving with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml.
Breed And Species Restrictions
The Dog Control Act 1996 prohibits importing several breeds/types, including the American Pit Bull Terrier and Perro de Presa Canario. No animal hybrids (e.g. wolf-dog crosses) are eligible for import, with the sole exception of Bengal cats, which require documentation showing 5 generations of domestic ancestry.
