Money & Payments in Pondicherry

Good to Know

  • Cash is still king for day-to-day spending in Pondicherry. Carry rupees at all times, especially small denominations for street vendors and local buses.
  • UPI QR payment scanning is now ubiquitous—download Google Pay, Paytm, or your bank's UPI app and load it from your international card before or upon arrival to avoid relying solely on ATMs and cash.
  • Avoid accepting dynamic currency conversion at ATMs; always choose to be charged in INR to pay at your bank's true exchange rate.
  • While major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in upscale hotels and restaurants, assume cash or UPI for everything else, including smaller established restaurants, boutiques, and beach shacks.
  • Tipping is discretionary and smaller in Pondicherry than in India's major metro areas; friendly service does not automatically trigger a tip expectation the way it might in Delhi or Mumbai.
  • Many hotels and some established restaurants require manual credit card forms for payment, which some travelers find less secure—prefer card terminals or mobile payment apps where possible.
  • The Indian rupee notes can become worn or creased; if given damaged notes, check they are still acceptable, as overly damaged notes may be refused by some vendors.

Tipping Norms

Hotels
₹100 per person per night is a standard tip for housekeeping. Bellboys typically receive ₹10–20.
Overview
Tipping is not mandatory in India, but it is common and expected in tourist areas and upscale establishments. Customs vary by region and service quality.
Tour Guides
₹100–300 per day for guides is standard, with higher tips for private tours.
Payment Method
Always tip in Indian Rupees (INR) rather than foreign currency to avoid conversion hassles and ensure the service worker retains full value.
Street Food And Small Meals
Tipping is not typically expected at street food stalls. For small meals under ₹300, a 10% tip is appreciated but optional.
Discretionary Note
South India (which includes Pondicherry) generally exhibits more relaxed tipping customs compared to major metropolitan areas like Delhi or Mumbai. Tipping is appreciated but locals are less likely to expect large tips.

Restaurants

Small Bills
For bills under ₹1,000, tip 10% if you enjoyed the service.
Larger Bills
For bills over ₹1,000, tip 5–7% is customary.
General Practice
Check your bill first; if a service charge (typically 10%) is already included, tipping is not expected. If no service charge:

Taxi And Auto Rickshaw Drivers

Overview
Tipping is customary for drivers but the amounts are modest.

Card Acceptance

Overview
Card acceptance varies by venue type. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at upscale restaurants and hotels, but smaller shops and street vendors rarely accept cards.
Upi Payments
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) QR codes are now the dominant payment method in Pondicherry. Most shops, cafés, auto-rickshaws, and street vendors accept UPI QR payments. You can load UPI from your international card using apps like Google Pay or Paytm and pay any merchant's QR code.
Digital Wallets
Apple Pay does not work in India. Virtual card acceptance is generally low; physical cards are required for most transactions.
International Cards
Most ATMs accept international cards bearing Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, or American Express logos. However, some smaller establishments may accept India-issued cards only.

ATM Access And Fees

ATM Availability
ATMs are readily available throughout Pondicherry and most of Tamil Nadu. Finding an ATM should not be difficult.
Withdrawal Limits
Typical per-transaction limits are 10,000–20,000 INR depending on the bank. You may need to make multiple withdrawals if you need more cash at once.
Foreign Card Acceptance
Most ATMs accept international debit and credit cards with Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, or Cirrus logos. Some smaller regional cooperative banks may not accept international cards, but these are rare.
Banks Favored By Foreigners
State Bank of India (SBI) is widely available and often does not charge withdrawal fees. Citibank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank ATMs also generally accept international cards.

Fees

Overview
ATM withdrawal fees for international cards range from 150–300 INR per transaction.
Fee Range
₹150
Dynamic Conversion Warning
Some ATMs offer currency conversion at the ATM's exchange rate rather than your bank's rate. Declining this option (choose 'Decline Conversion' or 'Charge in INR') avoids extra fees.

Account Setup Summary
Non-residents—and especially foreigners without Indian origin—are only eligible for limited types of accounts and must meet strict requirements. Foreign tourists can open Non-Resident (Ordinary) Rupee (NRO) accounts for a maximum period of six months. The entire account opening process takes eight to ten working days with both Indian bank and international bank.
