Money & Payments in Placencia

Good to Know

  • With a stable 2:1 exchange rate, widespread USD acceptance, and easy access to ATMs, paying for anything in Placencia is simple and comfortable.
  • Cash withdrawn from Belize ATMs are in Belize Dollars and NOT US Dollars.
  • If an ATM asks whether to 'Accept' or 'Decline' Conversion, if you 'Accept' you pay an extra fee; if you 'Decline' the ATM will convert at the bank/card's exchange rate.
  • It is important to use the local currency when tipping—Belizean dollars—otherwise you'll leave service providers with cash they can't use without paying high fees on currency exchange.
  • Tip should be left in the check folder rather than slipped into a server's hands or pockets, as tips are pooled among kitchen and front-of-house staff.
  • Credit card bills may include a 10% 'service charge' not always shared with staff—check your receipt before deciding whether to tip.
