Pets in Medellín

Very pet-friendly

Good to Know

  • Even though Medellín is very pet-friendly overall, indoor seating at restaurants is legally off-limits to dogs under national food-sanitation rules — always check for a patio, terrace, or 'área para mascotas' before assuming a place allows pets inside.
  • A microchip isn't required to bring your pet into Colombia, but get one anyway — it's the main way to recover a lost pet in an unfamiliar city and will likely be needed if you ever want to bring the pet back to the US, EU, or elsewhere.
  • Start the paperwork 8-10 weeks before travel: rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days old (but not expired), and the health certificate must be dated within 10 days of your flight — leaving this late is the most common reason nomads run into trouble at ICA.
  • El Poblado (especially Provenza and Los Balsos), Laureles, and Envigado have the highest concentration of pet-friendly cafés, restaurants and parks if you're choosing where to base yourself with a pet.
  • If flying from the US, your health certificate must be endorsed by a USDA-accredited vet through APHIS/VEHCS — a regular vet signature alone will not be accepted by Colombian authorities.
  • El Poblado has the highest concentration of trusted, higher-end vet clinics and 24-hour emergency options, which is convenient if you're staying in that neighborhood as a nomad.
  • Several clinics (e.g., Clinicalvet) offer home-visit vet services, which can be useful if you don't have easy transport for a sick or anxious pet.
  • Many everyday cafes and restaurants in El Poblado (like Pergamino, Café Zorba, and 37 Park) genuinely welcome dogs on outdoor terraces rather than just tolerating them, so pet-friendly dining is easy to find.
  • Public parks like Parque El Poblado, Parque Lineal La Presidenta, and Parque Lineal Ciudad del Río are free, close to nomad-heavy areas, and commonly used for dog walking and socializing.
  • Colombia does not have standardized national vet pricing, so it's worth calling ahead or asking for a quote, especially for surgery or emergency care.

Social Acceptance

Overview
Medellín is widely regarded as one of Latin America's most dog-friendly cities, with a strong culture of treating pets as family members.

Details

  • Medellín is one of Latin America's most dog-loving cities, with a strong culture around bringing pets to parks, patios, transport, and hotels.
  • According to a national health survey cited by local press, 67% of Colombian households have at least one pet, and increasingly more restaurants in Medellín open their doors to four-legged family members.
  • It is more unusual in Medellín to find a place that doesn't allow pets than one that does, with restaurants, bars, malls and other public spaces routinely welcoming mascotas.
  • By law, enclosed indoor dining and food-preparation areas may not admit dogs under national sanitary regulations enforced by the Ministry of Health, but Medellín's mild climate means most restaurants and cafés have developed pet-friendly outdoor patios or terrace seating where dogs are legally permitted.
  • At least 8 shopping malls in Medellín (including El Tesoro, Unicentro, Oviedo, Sandiego, Florida, Premium Plaza, Los Molinos and Santafé) already admit pets, with some hosting dedicated pet fairs.
  • Popular pet-friendly zones for dining/socializing with pets include El Poblado (Provenza, Los Balsos/El Tesoro), Laureles, and Envigado, where the mild climate favors open terraces and post-meal walks in nearby parks.
  • Local ride-hailing apps such as Easy Taxi have offered a dedicated 'Easy Pets' option for transporting animals.
  • Dog owners are legally required to register their pets and pay an annual fee, keep dogs leashed in public spaces, and clean up after them as part of city regulations.

Entry Requirements

Microchip
A microchip is NOT mandatory for dogs or cats entering Colombia, though it is strongly recommended for identification purposes and for future international travel (including possible return to the US or EU, which may require one).
Quarantine
No quarantine is required if all documentation (health certificate, vaccines, SISPAP registration, antiparasitic treatment) is complete and in order.
Registration
Travelers must register in ICA's online SISPAP system and submit an inspection application before travel; this generates the paperwork reviewed on arrival for issuance of a Sanitary Inspection Certificate (CIS).
Import Permit
No general import permit is required for pet dogs or cats entering Colombia (unlike other animal types, which do require an ICA-issued import permit).
Arrival Process
On arrival, travelers must declare the pet and proceed to the ICA (Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario) office present at all ports of entry, with the pet, health certificate, and vaccination record, where the Sanitary Inspection Certificate is issued after document review and a brief physical inspection.
Restricted Breeds
Colombia does not have blanket import bans by country of origin, but certain dog breeds are prohibited or classified as potentially dangerous domestically, and airlines may impose their own additional breed restrictions.
Health Certificate
An original veterinary health certificate must be issued within 10 calendar days before arrival in Colombia, confirming the pet is free of infectious/parasitic disease, listing species, breed, sex, age, coat, and vaccination details; for US travelers it must be endorsed by USDA APHIS.
Parasite Treatment
Dogs and cats must receive internal and external parasite treatment (including a product effective against tapeworm, e.g. containing Praziquantel) within 60 days before arrival, with product name and administration date recorded on the health certificate.
Rabies Vaccination
All cats and dogs over three months of age must be vaccinated for rabies at least 21 days prior to entering Colombia, and the vaccine must not be expired at time of travel.
Restricted Species
Wolf hybrids and Savannah/Bengal cats (unless at least 5th generation removed from wild pedigree) cannot be imported under standard pet regulations.

Other Required Vaccinations

Cats
Cats need proof of vaccination against rabies and feline panleukopenia; the feline viral rhinotracheitis/calicivirus/panleukopenia combo (FVRCP) is typically already covered by routine annual shots.
Dogs
Colombia's ICA requires proof of up-to-date vaccination against rabies, distemper, canine hepatitis, leptospirosis (canicola and icterohemorrhagiae), parvovirus, coronavirus, and parainfluenza — 7 vaccines total, recorded on the health certificate with vaccine name, lot number, administration date and expiration date.
Notes
Canine coronavirus vaccine is not commercially available in the US, so US-based travelers need a signed vet letter confirming this instead of the vaccine record.

EU Pet Passport Note

An EU Pet Passport is not valid for entry into Colombia — Colombia requires its own set of export health documents regardless of the pet's country of origin, and the standard 'EU Pet Passport' concept is distinct from what Colombia calls a pet's entry paperwork.

Return Travel Caveat

Because Colombia is classified as a high-rabies-risk country by the World Organization for Animal Health, pet owners planning to later return to the US or EU should check destination-specific requirements (e.g. microchip-before-rabies-vaccine sequencing, minimum age, or a rabies titer test) well in advance, as these can differ significantly from Colombia's own entry rules.
