Food & Dining in Medellín

Good to Know

  • El Poblado and Laureles are the main nomad/expat dining neighborhoods; expect 30-50% higher prices in El Poblado tourist areas (especially Parque Lleras) versus local restaurants in Laureles or downtown.
  • Menu del Día (daily lunch menu): soup, main course, juice for ~COP 15,000-21,000 ($4-5). Excellent value; common at local fondas throughout the city.
  • Street food and arepas are genuinely cheap and good. Empanadas cost ~COP 4,000 ($1); vendors ubiquitous.
  • Bandeja Paisa is massive (2-person portion); comes at most traditional restaurants COP 30,000-40,000 ($7.50-10). Share or eat as major meal.
  • Colombian cuisine is meat and fry-heavy; salads and vegetables limited in traditional dishes. Vegan scene in El Poblado is growing but not dominant outside that area.
  • Tipping: 10% (propina sugerida) standard in restaurants; rounding up to nearest ~COP 1,000-5,000 for taxis normal but not mandatory.
  • Specialty foods: Colombian coffee world-class; Pergamino and Urbania popular cafés. Colombian chocolate, arequipe (caramel), tropical fruits abundant.
  • Mercado del Río (El Poblado) is modern food hall with curated international and Colombian options; upscale atmosphere, good for brunch or dinner.
  • Grocery shopping: D1/Ara (budget) save 30-40% vs Éxito/Carulla; wet markets (Plaza Minorista, Envigado) cheapest for fresh produce but require cash, local knowledge. El Poblado supermarket density can mask price inflation—shop strategically.
  • Delivery: Rappi fast and reliable; Merqueo (local) sometimes undercuts supermarket prices. Check your address coverage before relying on delivery for time-sensitive items.
  • Alcohol: Aguardiente (Colombian liquor, 29% ABV) popular; craft cocktails growing. Colombian wine selection limited and pricey; imported wine rare/expensive.
  • Traditional Colombian food avoids raw vegetables and salads; prioritizes carbs, beans, meat. Street juice stands offer fresh tropical fruit juices (lulo, guanabana, mora, guayaba)—excellent and cheap.
