Outside Ancient Town
Areas outside the pedestrian zone like An Hoi Island and Cam Nam are walkable and can be accessed by foot, bicycle, or scooter over bridges connecting to both islands.
Getting Around Tier Rationale
Hoi An's compact Ancient Town has a dedicated pedestrian/bicycle zone and bike-friendly culture, making it easy to get around on foot or by bike without a car, even though formal public transit is minimal.
Context Note
Pedestrian congestion can be experienced in the heart of the town when pedestrian closures are in effect, and all Vietnamese cities could be improved with enforcement and changes in culture regarding no motorbike riding on footways.

Ancient Town Pedestrian Zone

Bike Friendly
Bicycles are still allowed to go around this area, and Hoi An has become the most bicycle-friendly city in Vietnam.
Operating Hours
The pedestrian area opens from 9 to 11:30 am, and 3 to 9:30 pm daily, except Phan Chu Trinh street which opens 5:30 to 9:30 pm. During these hours, visitors can walk or ride non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles or cyclos.
Description
The pedestrian area is in the Hoi An Ancient Town world heritage area and is designated to reduce noise and pollution in the heritage zone, helping to preserve it and making the town safe for visitors due to no motorbikes and cars.

Public Transit

Status
Limited public transit infrastructure. Buses operate locally but are not the primary mode of transport for visitors.
Note
Public transportation is lacking in Vietnam's bigger cities compared to nearby cities like Bangkok and Taipei.

Rideshare Reliability

Uber Status
Uber is no longer available in Vietnam. It ceased operations in the country in 2018 after being acquired by Grab, a Southeast Asian ride-hailing company.
Grab Coverage
Grab is the dominant ride-hailing app in Vietnam, and it offers a variety of services, including car rides, motorbike rides, and food delivery.
Grab Availability
Using Grab to get around Hoi An is simple and cost-effective, and it is the best way to get around if you don't drive your own motorbike.
Late Night Caveat
If you want Grab in Hoi An late at night that could be problematic, though lots of places advertise transfers as an alternative.
Reliability Note
Grab taxi rates will vary depending on the time of day, traffic, and how busy the drivers are. The fares are always shown upfront.
