Good to know
Good to Know
- Hamilton's downtown (Front Street area) is genuinely walkable with shops, restaurants, and waterfront access within a compact grid. Beyond downtown, buses and scooters become necessary.
- Public transport is reliable and affordable; Shorelink app + multi-day pass combo works well for short-term nomads.
- Scooter rental is popular but genuinely risky: narrow winding roads, steep hills, left-hand traffic, and local drivers speed. Only rent if confident on two wheels and comfortable driving on the left.
- Taxis are significantly more expensive than buses/ferries but offer door-to-door convenience and good local knowledge. Expect to pay ~$55 for Hamilton–Dockyard vs. $5 by bus.
- No car rentals available to tourists; this is by design to manage island traffic. Scooters and public transit are the main independent options.
- HITCH app (smartphone taxi dispatch) is the closest substitute for Uber/Lyft—allows credit-card payment and real-time tracking.
- Bus drivers do not provide change and refuse large luggage (suitcases). Come with exact coins or pre-purchase tokens/passes.
- If renting a scooter, add comprehensive liability waiver (small daily cost) to avoid expensive repair bills from damage liability.
