Engelberg Benedictine Monastery (Kloster Engelberg)
- Contact
- Benediktinerkloster 1, 6390 Engelberg
- Proximity To Center
- ~10 minutes walk or 5 minutes by PostBus
- Description
- For over 900 years, the Benedictine monastery has shaped the history of Engelberg. Rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1729, it contains rooms decorated with incredibly detailed wood inlays, and a baroque monastery church. On the west gallery of the church stands the largest organ in Switzerland: 9,097 sounding pipes and 137 stops. To date there are still approximately 30 monks living and working in the Engelberg monastery. Within the Engelberg Monastery Courtyard is a cheese dairy, where you can watch cheese-making demonstrations, a shop where you can buy their products, and a café.
Mount Titlis
- Description
- The Titlis Rotair is the world's first revolving cable car. During the 5-minute ride from Stand to the summit, the cabin slowly rotates 360 degrees, giving every passenger panoramic views of jagged cliffs, deep crevasses, and endless snowfields. You can choose to cross the thrilling Cliff Walk suspension bridge at lofty heights, visit the glacier grotto or sail across the glacier ice in the Ice Flyer chair lift. Titlis is the jewel in Central Switzerland's crown and the only publicly accessible glacier in the area.

Glacier Cave
- Description
- The must-see attraction at the top of Titlis is the mountain's free glacier cave where the ice goes back to before prehistoric man even discovered fire. The entrance is close to the Cliffwalk, and there are 150 metres of walkways beckoning you 20 metres into the core of the glacier. The walls radiate a strange and beautiful turquoise-blue light, caused by refracted sunlight.

Practical Tips
Practical Tips
- Book monastery tours in advance via ticketino.com or the monastery's official website
- Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially in peak summer.
- The Tal Museum is within easy walking distance of the Benedictine Monastery, making it convenient to visit both in one outing
- Great value at Sfr4.50 and they offer information sheets in other languages.
- The ticket costs 102 francs to get to the top, but it is an expense that as far as I am concerned has been amply repaid by the Panorama and all the activities on site included in the ticket (suspension bridge, ice cave).
- Consult the Tal Museum's website for special exhibitions during your visit
