Best Seasons

Best time to surf in Senegal is during winter (November to March) when powerful N and NW swells come from the North Atlantic; expect solid swells ranging from 2-10 ft providing good conditions for all kinds of breaks. October is known for having smaller but consistent swells ranging from 3-6 ft, with less rainfall and mellow waves with almost no crowds.

Airline Baggage Policies

Summary
Air Senegal accommodates passengers wishing to travel with surfboards, with sports equipment generally treated as part of checked baggage allowance, provided it falls within size and weight limits. Checked baggage allowances are 32 kg in Premium Economy and 23 kg in Economy for destinations like Banjul and Cap Skirring, or two pieces of 23 kg each to other destinations. Surf equipment is in short supply in Senegal, so pack spare leashes and fins; a 3mm wetsuit is wise in cooler months (December to May) and a spare board for bigger days is worthwhile if you have room.

Local Community And Scene

Size And Character
Senegal has a significant and talented local surf community, particularly in Dakar's Ngor neighborhood and around Yoff and Almadies beaches; many of the best Senegalese surfers grew up in these fishing villages, learning to surf on locally crafted boards.
Wave Accessibility
Most surf spots in Senegal are located close to the capital, Dakar, with around 15 surf spots within walking distance of each other. Each year more Senegalese women take up surfing and enjoy the many waves around Dakar.
Visitor Etiquette And Reception
The local community is welcoming but the lineup at Ngor can be competitive during the best swells; showing respect, reading lineup etiquette, and taking turns leads to a warm reception.
