Scuba Diving in Cozumel

Open Water course
MX$8,325

Updated July 2026

Good to Know

  • Almost all diving in Cozumel is drift diving with a boat — expect to be picked up down-current rather than swimming back to an anchor point, and to cover a lot of reef per dive with relatively little effort.
  • Genuine shore diving exists (Chankanaab National Park, Playa Corona) but is limited to a couple of easy, shallow sites — the famous reefs (Palancar, Santa Rosa, Colombia, Punta Sur, Maracaibo) are boat-only, with boat rides of roughly 10-40 minutes depending on the site.
  • The southern and western reefs sit inside the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, a protected marine area, so expect rules against touching or gloving the reef and possible seasonal reef-rest closures on certain sites.
  • Water is warm year-round (roughly 75-84°F/24-29°C) and most divers are comfortable in a 3mm wetsuit, though a 5mm can be worth packing for multiple dives in winter.
  • The splendid toadfish is endemic to Cozumel and found nowhere else on Earth — night dives (especially at Paradise Reef) are a good way to spot it along with octopus and lobster.
  • Get a clear, itemized quote before booking: some low quoted prices exclude the PADI eLearning fee, certification processing (PIC) fee, boat/marine-park fees, or equipment rental, which can add $100-160 USD to an initially cheap-looking course.
  • Doing the PADI eLearning/theory portion online before you arrive can shrink your in-water Open Water course from 3-4 days down to about 2 days, freeing up vacation time.
  • With 300+ operators on a small island, quality and safety practices vary a lot — it's worth checking reviews and group size (some boats run 20-30 divers, others cap at 6-8) rather than choosing on price alone.
  • If you want to try freediving, a few Cozumel shops offer SSI or AIDA freediving certifications, but this is a niche add-on to the island's core scuba-training industry, not a widespread specialty.

Dive Sites And Conditions

Overview
Cozumel's dive sites sit along a roughly 30+ mile reef system on the island's west and south coasts, part of the Mesoamerican Reef belt. Nearly every site is a drift dive: a steady current (often around 1.5 knots, occasionally 3+ knots) runs south-to-north along the coast, so divers typically 'fly' along the reef rather than swim against it. Water temperature runs from about 75°F/24°C in winter to 84°F/29°C in summer, and visibility frequently exceeds 100ft/30m. Most of the named reefs (Palancar, Santa Rosa, Colombia, Punta Sur, San Francisco, Yucab, Paso del Cedral, Tormentos, and the northern walls) lie inside the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, a protected marine area established in 1996.
Access Type
Predominantly day-boat, NOT liveaboard-dependent. Dive shops based in San Miguel run daily two-tank boat trips out to the reefs, with boat rides typically ranging from about 10-15 minutes (northern/close-in sites, Paradise, Chankanaab) up to 30-40 minutes for the southernmost sites (Punta Sur, Maracaibo). Genuine shore diving is limited to a small number of spots — mainly Chankanaab National Park and a couple of beach-club entry points near Villa Blanca/Playa Corona — used for training, refreshers, and some night dives. The island's signature reefs (the full Palancar system, Santa Rosa Wall, Colombia, Punta Sur, Maracaibo, and the north-end walls) are boat-access only; there is no realistic way to shore-dive Cozumel's best-known sites.
Best Season Overview
Diveable year-round, but November to April (dry season) generally brings the calmest surface conditions and most reliable visibility. June through November is hurricane/rainy season — storms can cancel boat trips for a day or two and heavy rain runoff can temporarily reduce nearshore visibility, though good diving days still occur throughout. Schooling eagle rays are most reliably seen in winter, roughly November through March, especially on the northern walls and at Santa Rosa/Colombia. Turtles are seen on most reefs year-round but sightings pick up in the warmer months.

Courses And Operators

Freediving Crossover

Details
At least one Cozumel-based scuba operator (Cozumel Scuba / Cozumel Dive School group) also runs SSI Freediving Level 1 and Level 2 (Advanced Freediver) courses, and a Yucatan-wide freediving operator (Spearfishing Today) offers AIDA 2** freediving certification with Cozumel listed as one of its operating locations alongside Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
Genuine Crossover Confirmed
Yes
Sites Note
Freediving crossover is more commonly associated with shore/beach training sites (used for confined-water scuba training) rather than the deep wall dives Cozumel is famous for; it is a real but secondary offering compared to the island's core scuba-training business.

Dive Shop Operator Density

Caveat
This figure comes from dive-industry blogs/operators themselves rather than an official tourism-board or chamber-of-commerce register, so treat it as an order-of-magnitude figure rather than an exact count.
Estimate
Widely cited as 300+ named dive operators/outfits on the island, an unusually high concentration for its size, reflecting Cozumel's status as one of the world's most popular certification and dive-vacation destinations.
Character
Ranges from large multi-boat 'cattle boat' operations carrying 20-30 divers to small boutique outfits with 6-8 divers max, plus several shore-based/beach training operations geared specifically at certification students.

Certifying Bodies And Levels

Summary
PADI is the dominant certifying agency on Cozumel, with SSI offered as a secondary option by some shops; a handful of shops also run AIDA freediving programs.
PADI Pathway Available
Discover Scuba Diving, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox, Rescue Diver, various specialties, Divemaster, and Instructor Development Course (IDC) are all offered on the island.
