Good to know
Good to Know
- If you're staying in one of the five Cinque Terre villages, only Riomaggiore has an actual dive centre and boat departing from within Cinque Terre itself — the wider 'Gulf of Poets' sites around Portovenere, Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto require first getting to San Terenzo or Lerici (train plus bus/taxi from La Spezia), then a further short boat ride.
- Both zones are officially protected marine areas, so expect a briefing on park rules and possibly seasonal restrictions on where boats can moor.
- Sites range from easy, shallow caves and reefs suitable for first-time or beginner divers (e.g. Grotta di Byron, Lama Crexia, Punta San Pietro) to deeper, current-affected reefs recommended only for experienced divers (e.g. the Secca between Palmaria and Tino, Zone A sites down to 33 metres).
- As with any dive trip, don't plan to fly for at least 24 hours after your last dive — several local operators state this explicitly.
- Riomaggiore has the only dive shop physically inside Cinque Terre — other named dive centers (Cadimare, San Fruttuoso, Portofino) are day-trip distance away via the Gulf of La Spezia or Portofino peninsula, not walkable/short-taxi options.
- The Riomaggiore center accepts cash only for some transactions per recent visitor reports, so bring euros rather than assuming card payment on-site.
- Access to the water at the Riomaggiore shop involves a staircase down to the harbor, which visitors with mobility issues should ask about in advance.
Typical Costs
- Certification Course Full Price
- Not independently confirmed for Cinque Terre's own operator via public pricing pages — recommend contacting the dive center directly for current Open Water Diver course pricing.
- Note
- The €135 figure is per person for two guided fun dives (not a certification course) at the Riomaggiore center, taken from a direct booking exchange with the operator. No verified per-course (Open Water etc.) price list was found for this specific shop.

Diving around Cinque Terre is small-scale, RIB/day-boat and shore based — there is no liveaboard scene here. The only dive centre physically inside the five villages is in Riomaggiore, and it takes divers by boat into Zone A of the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area a few minutes offshore. A second, larger cluster of named sites sits just outside Cinque Terre proper in the Gulf of Poets (Portovenere, Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto islands), reached from dive bases in San Terenzo/Lerici — this requires a train-plus-bus or taxi transfer of roughly an hour from the Cinque Terre villages before a further 10-30 minute boat ride out to the sites, so it is not a same-village shore option even though it is commonly marketed together with Cinque Terre diving.
Access Type
Predominantly boat-based day diving on RIBs/dinghies (5-25 minutes offshore depending on site), plus at least one genuine shore dive directly from Riomaggiore harbour. No liveaboard operations exist in this area.
Best Season
Late spring through early autumn (roughly May to October) is when centres run trips and when water temperature and visibility are best; several operators only run seasonally in this window.
Genuinely low density inside Cinque Terre itself: there is effectively only one dive operator physically located within the five villages.
Freediving Crossover
- Details
- The Riomaggiore dive center's own course pages include a 'skin diver' / apnoea course alongside its scuba course lineup, so genuine scuba/freediving crossover exists at the same operator rather than being assumed from the wider region.
