Beaches in Berlin

Berlin is landlocked with no ocean beaches, but has approximately 50 swimmable lakes within the city limits, many within 30–45 minutes via public transit.

Good to Know

  • Most Berlin lakes sit in public transit fare zone B—a standard AB ticket covers a round trip from Alexanderplatz; no C zone needed unless heading toward Potsdam.
  • Free lakes have no formal surveillance or lifeguards. Water is monitored for quality, but swimmers use them at their own responsibility.
  • Nude swimming (FKK) sections exist at some lakes (unmarked). It's casual and legal in designated or tolerated areas. Wannsee's main beach is fully clothed; free shores may mix.
  • Stranger theft from shore bags is rare but happens. Bring minimal valuables. Most locals leave bags on grass informally.
  • Beach bars and restaurants are abundant on paid lidos and along shores; most lake-side kiosks are slow on hot days. Picnics from supermarkets often beat waiting.
  • Paid lidos (Strandbäder) recommend online booking in advance, especially Wannsee on sunny weekends. Up to 20% online discounts available.
  • Summers are warm but brief. Peak swimming months are June–August. Water typically ~18–20°C (68°F). Many lakes close facilities in September or earlier.
  • Wannsee's facilities are partially under repair in 2026 with reduced toilets/showers. Check before planning a full family day.
  • S-Bahn to lakes is bundled into normal city tickets—no extra cost if you have an AB pass.
