Good to Know

  • In many places, (especially in Bariloche), there will be huge discounts for shopping and food if you pay cash
  • Cash is king in Argentina—bring more cash than you would in other destinations
  • Always carry a small amount of cash for 'subte' (subway) cards or small cafes that might have a 'solo efectivo' (cash only) sign
  • Counterfeit bills are a documented risk; check watermarks and raised print on notes
  • Service charges may be added to the bill automatically when you're in a restaurant, hotel or bar in Argentina. Double check your bill before deciding whether or not to tip
  • Western Union has offices in Bariloche and offers better rates than ATMs

Tipping Norms

Taxis
Tipping taxi drivers isn't expected, but rounding up to the nearest whole number or leaving an extra 5-10% is appreciated, especially if the driver helped with luggage or provided good service
Tour Guides
Always tip your tour guides, especially if they greatly improved your experience. The general recommendation is 10% per day
Bars And Cafes
In bars and cafes in Argentina you can round the bill to the next significant amount, or leave a small tip each time you order a drink
Currency For Tipping
Whether you're tipping with cash or card, always use the local currency to save money

Hotels

Porters
For bellhops or porters, a tip of around 5000 to 10000 Argentine pesos (USD 5 to 10) per bag is customary
Housekeeping
Housekeeping staff might be tipped similarly per day, especially if you're staying at a higher-end hotel

Restaurants

Standard
Expect to tip around 10% of the bill. If you get exceptionally good service, say thank you with a tip closer to 15-20%
Important
Restaurants do NOT have a 'tip' section on credit card receipts so, if you are planning on paying for the meal with plastic, be sure to bring cash to pay the tip separately
